Brian Walsh is executive director of Ethics and Public Policy Center's new American Religious Freedom program. The program is devoted to protecting and enhancing the inherent religious freedoms of Americans of all religious faiths. Before joining EPPC, Mr. Walsh was Senior Legal Research Fellow in former Attorney General Edwin Meese's Center for Legal & Judicial Studies at The Heritage Foundation. Mr. Walsh and Heritage were at the forefront of a diverse coalition of individuals and organizations fighting the abuse of criminal law and criminal process, especially at the federal level.
Mr. Walsh co-edited Heritage's One Nation Under Arrest, a book that explores the damage caused to America's criminal justice systems by unreasonable government officials armed with vague, overly broad, and otherwise unjust criminal laws. Without Intent, a 2010 report Mr. Walsh co-authored with the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, was the focus of a bipartisan hearing in the U.S. House of Representatives on the problems and solutions of overcriminalization.
Mr. Walsh has testified before committees of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate and before the White House Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board. He has appeared frequently on television and radio, and his commentary has been published by numerous traditional and new-media publications.
Mr. Walsh served as a law clerk to Pasco M. Bowman, II, on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and was a litigation associate with Kirkland & Ellis LLP, Washington, D.C., and Willcox & Savage, Norfolk, Virginia. He is a magna cum laude graduate of Regent University School of Law and holds a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
