The Cube and the Cathedral
The Cube and the Cathedral
Europe, America and Politics Without God
By George Weigel
Posted: Friday, March 11, 2005
Why do Europeans and Americans see the world so differently? Why do Europeans and Americans have such different understandings of democracy and its discontents in the twenty-first century? Contrasting the civilization that produced the starkly modernist "cube" of the Great Arch of La Defense in Paris with the civilization that produced the "cathedral" of Notre-Dame, George Weigel argues that Europe's embrace of a narrow secularism has led to a crisis of morale that is eroding Europe's soul and threatening its future-with dire lessons for the rest of the democratic world.   [Read More]

Why Young Adults Are Embracing Christian Orthodoxy
By Colleen Carroll Campbell
Posted: Saturday, May 1, 2004
Now available in paperback! Saving sex for marriage. Attending the Latin Mass. Witnessing to others about Christ. Baby boomers largely rejected these trappings of traditional Christianity -- so why are their children embracing them with such fervor? Author Colleen Carroll taps into the restless hearts of America's Gen-X believers, revealing their deep attraction to tradition, longing for truth, and determination to change the world. As Carroll writes, "The grassroots movement they have started bears watching because it has thrived in the most unlikely places, captured the hearts of the most unlikely people, and aims to effect the most unlikely of outcomes: a revitalization of American Christianity and culture."  [Read More]

Evangelicals and Civic Engagement
By Michael Cromartie
Posted: Wednesday, July 16, 2003
The essays in this volume look at the role of evangelicals in American civic life. The contributors examine evangelical Christians' beliefs and activities on topics ranging from bioethics to race relations and welfare reform to international human rights. Taken together, the essays show that the social commitment of evangelicals extends considerably beyond family-related issues, and that their activity in the public sphere makes an essential contribution to the public good.  [Read More]

Debating Religion and Republic
Edited by Alan Mittleman
Posted: Friday, November 1, 2002
Jews and the American Public Square is a study of how Jews have grappled with the presence of religion, both their own and that of others, in American public life. It surveys historical Jewish approaches to church-state relations and analyzes Jewish responses to the religion clauses of the First Amendment. The book also explores how the contemporary sociological and political characteristics of American Jews bear on their understanding of the public dimensions of American religion.   [Read More]
Democracy: How Direct?
Democracy: How Direct?
Views from the Founding Era and the Polling Era
Edited by Elliot Abrams
Posted: Tuesday, October 1, 2002
For more than two hundred years Americans have been debating how direct a democracy they want. Advocates of a powerful role for direct voting -- in which public opinion dictates public policy -- fear elitism and the usurpation of democratic rule by politicians, bureaucrats, and the rich. Advocates of representative voting fear that emotion and factional interest will undermine stability and justice. Through representation, they believe, cool-headed deliberation within institutions will prevail over popular passion.  [Read More]
