About

The Ethics and Public Policy Center is Washington’s premier research institute on issues of religion and society. An integral part of EPPC's program, the Catholic Studies Project has produced a steady, influential stream of conferences, seminars, books, articles, columns, and reviews that have helped shape the engagement of the Catholic Church in the United States with the great international and domestic issues of our time.

The Catholic Studies Project is also a prominent Washington reference point for government officials, members of Congress, and journalists seeking to understand the social doctrine of the Catholic Church and its application to public policy questions.

In addition, the Catholic Studies Project is shaping the world Church’s address to the great public issues of the day through its annual summer seminar on the social teaching of Pope John Paul II.

EPPC Distinguished Senior Fellow George Weigel has directed the Catholic Studies Project since 1996. Since 1999, Weigel has been consultant on Vatican affairs for NBC News, and he appears frequently on NBC Nightly News, CNBC, and MSNBC. Weigel covered Pope John Paul II’s March 2000 Holy Land pilgrimage and World Youth Day 2002 in Toronto for NBC and has worked closely with the network in designing its coverage of the next papal conclave.

In addition to his work with NBC, Weigel has appeared on PBS, including the “News Hour with Jim Lehrer” and “Religion and Ethics News Weekly.”

George Weigel’s weekly column, The Catholic Difference, is syndicated to more than fifty Catholic papers throughout the United States, with a readership of some 2.3 million.

In addition to that column, Weigel has contributed op-ed columns to the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times and its syndicate, the Boston Globe, Canada’s National Post, and the Daily Telegraph of London. His articles and reviews appear in a variety of publications, including First Things and Crisis.
